FAQ's

Q: What is a scopist? How can I get started as a proofreader? What equipment do I need to be a transcriptionist?

A: Here are the simple definitions. A scopist is someone who edits the imperfect transcripts created by court reporters from their stenographic notes. Proofreaders proofread the work that has been scoped before it goes to final approval. Transcriptionists produce entire transcripts from scratch using audio or video. If you have an interest in becoming a court reporter, scopist, proofreader or transcriptionist, we suggest that you find a court reporting or scoping school with verifiable references.

Q: How come when I log in through AOL I have a hard time viewing the site or updating my profile image?

A: If you're using an AOL browser or a Prodigy browser, you may have some problems updating your profile through those internet browsers. To correct the problem, go ahead and connect to the internet through AOL/Prodigy, and then once you're connected minimize that window and open an Internet Explorer or Firefox browser in a separate window to log back into the site. You will then be able to update all of your information.

Q: Why should I register here when I'm already listed on other websites?

A: Scoping Central was created to offer so much more to the court reporting community than a free place to put your name and telephone number on the internet. That's why it's like having your own website, but better. We want you to be in control of your information and to have the ability to update that information at any time from anywhere. We also want people who are searching our directory to be in control of the information they view by enabling search capabilities to narrow down the list to exactly what they are looking for in seconds. These tools combined with our other member benefits are just some of the many reasons why we hope to attract professionals in our industry who have been searching for a better solution to pull the reporting community together.

Q: I am a reporter looking for a scopist / an agency looking for a reporter. Why should I join when I can simply post a job in the want ads section?

A: In addition to other great membership benefits like joining in forum discussions, and viewing the job board, our most unique feature is providing our members the ability to create and edit your own online profile, which can be updated instantly and as frequently as you like. It's like having your own website within a website.

Q: I am a student currently working as a scopist while attending court reporting school. Will I need to register again once I become a court reporter?

A: No. Once you are a registered member you can update your profile information instantly, including professional status and background. Membership to Scoping Central is an ideal way for reporting students to find part-time work while attending school, and then upon graduation changing their professional title to court reporter to find work with agencies and to seek a scopist or proofreader of their own.

Q:
I've been working for the same reporter for years as a scopist/proofreader. Why should I become a member?

A: While all of our members benefit from the many things Scoping Central has to offer, this website was designed mostly with you in mind. The majority of scopists, proofreaders and transcriptionists work from home and have no physical office location where they can meet and socialize with co-workers, which can sometimes leave people feeling isolated. We have worked hard to provide you with a place to easily locate others in the industry who are seeking to form new business and social relationships.

Q: I want to submit a helpful link to the community. How do I submit?

A: To submit a transcript resource link, just visit our contact us page, fill out the form, give us the name of the site, URL, and why this link is useful to the community. If you are a school or other organization that would like to exchange links with us, please send us a brief message with your site information and type "link exchange request" in the subject of our contact form.
